canon: the apothecary diaries

canon point: current with the manga only, but don't mind light novel spoilers.
bio: kidnapped and forced to work in the imperial palace, now alternates between acting as a food tester and physician for the consorts of the inner court and as an attendant to jinshi, a high-ranking official. grew up under the care of her adoptive father, who worked as the apothecary in the pleasure district. her extensive knowledge of medicine and poisons come from him. her expertise and observational skills often get her called upon to solve the various mysteries of the court.
the story's setting seems to be a fictional analogue to imperial china (possibly around the song dynasty 960-1279).
physical affection: maybe. won't bite your hand off but will tell you to move it. reacts better to women than to men.
physical violence: with restraint... she has an increased amount of tolerance to drugs and poison, but is otherwise just a human girl.
shipping: currently playing her as aroace, but i don't mind playing out the dynamics in canon.
smut: nah.
warnings: maomao frequently talks of medicine, drugs, and poison, and if given the chance, will use herself as an experimental subject to test poisons and cures. while the apothecary diaries isn't what i'd call a "dark" canon, it does reference period-typical issues in a way that is light-hearted or "normalized" for the characters. maomao may refer casually to things that are normal in her society, including: concubines, betrothals of underage girls, sex work, crime/violence against women, foot-binding, and castration.
